Abstract
The rise of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria has become a major global health concern, prompting the search for alternative antimicrobial agents. Essential oils derived from various plant sources have shown promising antimicrobial properties, making them potential candidates for combating pathogenic bacteria. This research project aims to investigate the antimicrobial properties of essential oils extracted from local plants against pathogenic bacteria. The study will begin with a comprehensive review of the literature on essential oils and their antimicrobial activities. Various studies on the antimicrobial effects of essential oils against pathogenic bacteria will be analyzed to provide a solid background for the research. The research methodology will involve the extraction of essential oils from selected local plants using different extraction techniques such as steam distillation and solvent extraction. The antimicrobial activity of these essential oils will be evaluated through disc diffusion and broth dilution methods against a panel of pathogenic bacteria. The findings from the study will be discussed in detail in Chapter Four, where the effectiveness of different essential oils against specific pathogenic bacteria will be highlighted. Factors influencing the antimicrobial activity of essential oils, such as chemical composition and concentration, will be explored to provide insights into their mechanism of action. The limitations of the study, including potential sources of bias and variability, will also be addressed to ensure the reliability of the results. In conclusion, this research project aims to contribute to the understanding of the antimicrobial properties of essential oils extracted from local plants against pathogenic bacteria. The significance of this study lies in the potential development of natural antimicrobial agents that could help address the challenge of antibiotic resistance. By elucidating the antimicrobial mechanisms of essential oils, this research could pave the way for the future development of novel antimicrobial therapies derived from plant sources.
