Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the antimicrobial potential of plant-derived compounds against multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, which pose a significant threat to global public health. The rise of antibiotic-resistant infections has become a pressing concern, as conventional antimicrobial treatments are becoming increasingly ineffective. In response to this crisis, the exploration of alternative therapeutic options, such as plant-based compounds, has gained considerable attention. Plants have a rich history of providing valuable medicinal resources, and many traditional medicinal systems have long recognized their potent antimicrobial properties. This project seeks to harness the vast phytochemical diversity found in plants and systematically evaluate their ability to inhibit the growth and virulence of MDR bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The study will focus on a comprehensive screening of a diverse array of plant extracts, essential oils, and purified bioactive compounds for their antimicrobial activities against a panel of clinically relevant MDR pathogens. The project will employ a multi-pronged approach, combining laboratory-based in vitro assays, molecular characterization, and mechanism-of-action studies to unravel the antimicrobial mechanisms of the plant-derived compounds. This will involve the use of modern analytical techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, to identify and characterize the active phytochemical constituents. Furthermore, the project will investigate the synergistic potential of plant-derived compounds when combined with conventional antibiotics, exploring the possibility of enhancing the efficacy of existing antimicrobial therapies. This approach could lead to the development of novel combination treatments capable of overcoming the challenges posed by MDR pathogens. In addition to the antimicrobial evaluation, the project will also delve into the underlying mechanisms of action, aiming to elucidate the specific molecular targets and signaling pathways affected by the plant-derived compounds. This knowledge can contribute to a deeper understanding of the antimicrobial properties of these natural compounds and guide the rational design of more effective and targeted antimicrobial agents. The findings from this project will have significant implications for the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies. By harnessing the antimicrobial potential of plant-derived compounds, the project seeks to provide new therapeutic options to combat the growing threat of MDR infections. The successful outcomes of this research could lead to the identification of novel lead compounds or synergistic combinations that can be further developed into effective antimicrobial treatments, offering hope in the fight against the global antimicrobial resistance crisis. Overall, this project represents a multidisciplinary effort to explore the untapped potential of plant-derived compounds as a promising source of antimicrobial agents against MDR pathogens. The insights gained from this research have the potential to contribute to the advancement of antimicrobial drug discovery and the development of innovative strategies to address the pressing public health challenge of antibiotic resistance.
