Project Abstract

Abstract
Negation is a fundamental aspect of language that allows speakers to express negated propositions. In the Bura language, spoken in the region of the Mandara Mountains in Cameroon and Nigeria, negation is realized through a variety of linguistic structures and strategies. This study aims to explore the different aspects of negation in Bura by analyzing its morphosyntactic and semantic characteristics. The investigation into Bura negation involves examining the negative markers used in the language, such as the particles "mbè" and "tà," as well as the negative verb suffix "-tí." These elements play a crucial role in signaling negation in Bura sentences. The study also delves into the placement of negative markers within the sentence structure and their interaction with other grammatical elements. Furthermore, the research explores the semantic implications of negation in Bura. By analyzing negated sentences in context, the study aims to uncover how negation influences the meaning and interpretation of utterances in the language. This includes investigating the scope of negation and its effect on the truth conditions of propositions in Bura discourse. Additionally, the study investigates the pragmatics of negation in Bura, examining how speakers use negation to convey politeness, emphasis, or rhetorical effects. By analyzing examples of negation in various communicative contexts, the research sheds light on the nuanced ways in which speakers deploy negation for different pragmatic purposes. Moreover, the research delves into the diachronic aspects of Bura negation, tracing the historical development of negation markers and structures in the language. By exploring the evolution of negation over time, the study aims to uncover patterns of change and continuity in Bura's negation system. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the various facets of negation in the Bura language. By examining the morphosyntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and diachronic aspects of negation, the research contributes to our understanding of how negation is realized and functions in this understudied African language.

This chapter introduces the language of study, the people speaking the language and their geographical location. It introduces us to the background of the speakers of the language which includes their culture and beliefs.

Also, a brief explanation of the scope of the study, Method of Data Collection, Genetic Classification and the Theoretical framework used in carrying out the research on the language are discussed.

This research is aimed at describing the Bura Negation. Bura is a language Spoken in two (2) local government areas in Borno State. The two local governments’ areas are Biu and Shani respectively. The Bura people are about 250,000 in population.
