Abstract
This research aims to investigate the impact of code-switching on language comprehension in bilingual individuals. Code-switching, the practice of alternating between two or more languages within a conversation or utterance, is a common phenomenon among bilingual speakers. However, its effects on language processing and understanding are still not fully understood. This study seeks to address this gap in the literature by examining how code-switching influences language comprehension in bilingual individuals. The research will be guided by a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon. The study will involve bilingual participants who are proficient in two or more languages and will explore how their language comprehension is affected when exposed to code-switching in various contexts. Chapter one of the research will provide an introduction to the topic, background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter two will consist of a comprehensive literature review covering ten key areas related to code-switching, language comprehension, bilingualism, cognitive processing, and language acquisition. Chapter three will detail the research methodology, including the research design, participant selection criteria, data collection methods, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The chapter will also outline the research instruments and tools to be used in data collection. In chapter four, the findings of the research will be discussed in detail, analyzing the impact of code-switching on language comprehension in bilingual individuals. The chapter will present and interpret the results of the study, providing insights into how code-switching influences language processing and understanding among bilingual speakers. Finally, chapter five will present the conclusion and summary of the research, highlighting the key findings, implications, and recommendations for future research in this area. The study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on code-switching and language comprehension, providing valuable insights for educators, researchers, and language professionals working with bilingual populations. Overall, this research seeks to shed light on the complex relationship between code-switching and language comprehension in bilingual individuals, offering new perspectives on how bilingual speakers navigate and process multiple languages in their everyday interactions.
