Project Abstract

This project aims to explore the dynamics of language contact and code-switching in multilingual settings, offering valuable insights into the linguistic and social phenomena that shape communication in diverse communities. The study will investigate the factors that drive individuals and communities to navigate multiple languages, the patterns and functions of code-switching, and the implications for language preservation, education, and societal integration. Multilingualism is a global reality, with individuals and communities regularly engaging with two or more languages in their daily lives. The interactions between these languages can result in complex linguistic phenomena, such as code-switching, where speakers seamlessly alternate between languages within a single conversation or even within a single sentence. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and social factors that influence these linguistic practices is crucial for addressing challenges faced by multilingual populations, fostering language preservation, and promoting effective communication and integration. This project will employ a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and anthropology, to examine the intricate relationship between language contact and code-switching. The research will involve both qualitative and quantitative methods, including ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews, and language proficiency assessments, to capture the nuances of language use in real-world settings. One of the central aims of the project is to investigate the motivations and patterns of code-switching among individuals and communities.
