Abstract
This research project explores the intricate relationship between environmental pollution and moral pollution as depicted in Kaine Agary's novel "Yellow-Yellow." The study delves into how the degradation of the physical environment in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria mirrors the decay of moral values and ethical standards among the characters in the novel. By analyzing the interconnectedness of environmental degradation and moral corruption, the research aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of pollution on both the natural world and human behavior. Through a close reading of "Yellow-Yellow," the research examines how the oil industry's exploitation of the Niger Delta's resources leads to environmental devastation, which in turn contributes to the moral decay of the characters. The novel vividly portrays the despoiled landscape of the region, highlighting the toxic impact of oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation on the ecosystem and the people who inhabit it. These environmental disasters serve as a backdrop for the characters' own moral decline, as they grapple with issues of greed, corruption, and betrayal. Furthermore, the research analyzes the psychological and emotional toll of living in a polluted environment on the characters, illustrating how their sense of self-worth and ethical judgment are eroded by the constant exposure to environmental hazards. By drawing parallels between the physical contamination of the land and the moral contamination of the individuals, the study underscores the pervasive nature of pollution and its far-reaching consequences on society. By illuminating the ways in which environmental degradation can translate into moral degradation, the study calls for greater accountability, empathy, and ethical responsibility in confronting the challenges of pollution and its detrimental effects on society.
