Project Abstract

This project aims to address the growing need for effective information literacy skills among undergraduate students in the digital age. In today's information-rich environment, the ability to critically evaluate, manage, and effectively utilize information is crucial for academic success, lifelong learning, and effective decision-making. However, numerous studies have highlighted that many undergraduate students struggle with various aspects of information literacy, such as identifying credible sources, effectively searching for information, and properly citing references. The primary objective of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive program that will enhance the information literacy skills of undergraduate students. The program will focus on building a strong foundation in the core competencies of information literacy, including the ability to recognize the need for information, access relevant sources, critically evaluate information, and use information effectively and ethically. The project will begin with a thorough assessment of the current information literacy skills of the target undergraduate population. This will be accomplished through a combination of surveys, focus groups, and performance-based evaluations. The data collected during this assessment phase will be used to identify the specific areas of strength and weakness, thereby informing the development of the intervention program. The intervention program will consist of a series of interactive workshops, online tutorials, and one-on-one mentoring sessions. The workshops will cover a range of topics, such as effective database searching, evaluating the credibility of online sources, and properly citing references in academic writing. The online tutorials will provide students with self-paced learning opportunities, allowing them to revisit key concepts and practice their skills at their own pace. Additionally, the project will establish a network of peer-to-peer mentors, who will work closely with students to provide personalized support and guidance. These mentors will be selected from among high-performing undergraduate students who have demonstrated exceptional information literacy skills and a commitment to helping their peers. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the program, the project will also focus on integrating information literacy instruction into the core curriculum of various undergraduate programs. By collaborating with faculty members and academic departments, the project team will develop discipline-specific information literacy modules that can be seamlessly incorporated into existing courses. The success of the project will be evaluated through a comprehensive assessment plan, which will include pre- and post-intervention evaluations, ongoing monitoring of student engagement and performance, and feedback from both students and faculty. The findings of this evaluation will be used to refine and improve the program, ensuring that it continues to meet the evolving needs of the undergraduate student population. By enhancing the information literacy skills of undergraduate students, this project aims to empower them to become more self-directed, critical, and effective learners.
