Abstract
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) plays a vital role in promoting and protecting human rights globally, including in Nigeria. This research project aims to explore the specific contributions of UNESCO in the protection of human rights in Nigeria. The study will examine the various programs, initiatives, and partnerships that UNESCO has undertaken in Nigeria to advance human rights principles. UNESCO's focus on education, science, and culture aligns closely with the fundamental values and principles of human rights. By promoting quality education, scientific research, and cultural preservation, UNESCO indirectly supports the realization of human rights in Nigeria. The organization's activities in promoting freedom of expression, access to information, and cultural diversity also contribute to strengthening human rights protection in the country. Through capacity-building workshops, policy advocacy, and technical assistance, UNESCO has worked closely with Nigerian authorities and civil society organizations to enhance human rights awareness and compliance. The organization's involvement in promoting media freedom, gender equality, and the protection of cultural heritage further underscores its commitment to advancing human rights in Nigeria. Moreover, UNESCO's efforts to promote intercultural dialogue and tolerance are essential for fostering a culture of respect for human rights in Nigeria's diverse society. By supporting initiatives that celebrate cultural diversity and heritage preservation, UNESCO contributes to building a more inclusive and rights-respecting society in Nigeria. This research project will utilize a combination of qualitative research methods, including document analysis, interviews, and case studies, to assess the impact and effectiveness of UNESCO's human rights protection initiatives in Nigeria. By examining specific programs and projects implemented by UNESCO in collaboration with local stakeholders, this study seeks to identify best practices and lessons learned for enhancing human rights protection in the Nigerian context. Overall, this research project will contribute to a better understanding of the role of UNESCO in the protection of human rights in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars working in the fields of human rights, international development, and education. The findings of this study will help inform future strategies and interventions aimed at strengthening human rights protection and promotion in Nigeria with the support of UNESCO.
