Abstract
The African continent has a long history of military upsurges and political instability, with various countries experiencing periods of military coups and interventions. Nigeria, as a regional power in West Africa, has actively worked to prevent the recurrence of military upsurges and promote stability in the region. This study focuses on the efforts of Nigeria, under the leadership of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in preventing the second wave of military upsurge in Africa, with a specific focus on the role played by Nigeria in the Mali crisis. The research examines the context of the Mali crisis and the regional implications of the conflict, particularly in relation to the potential spread of instability and military interventions in the region. It analyzes the strategies employed by Nigeria, both independently and in collaboration with regional and international partners, to address the crisis and prevent the escalation of military upsurge in Mali and beyond. Furthermore, the study delves into the specific actions taken by Goodluck Jonathan's administration in response to the Mali crisis, including diplomatic initiatives, peacekeeping efforts, and support for regional mediation processes. It also considers the challenges faced by Nigeria in its efforts to prevent the spread of military upsurge, such as limited resources, regional dynamics, and the complex nature of the conflict in Mali.
