Project Abstract

Abstract
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. Recent research has highlighted the potential role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBS, with dysbiosis being a key feature in affected individuals. Probiotics, live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts, have emerged as a promising intervention for modulating gut microbiota composition and alleviating IBS symptoms. This study aims to investigate the effect of probiotics on gut microbiota composition in individuals with IBS. The research will consist of a randomized controlled trial involving individuals diagnosed with IBS. Participants will be divided into two groups an intervention group receiving a specific probiotic supplement and a control group receiving a placebo. Stool samples will be collected from both groups at baseline and after a specified intervention period to analyze changes in gut microbiota composition using advanced sequencing techniques. The literature review will provide a comprehensive overview of the role of gut microbiota in IBS pathophysiology, the mechanisms of action of probiotics in modulating gut microbiota, and previous studies examining the use of probiotics in IBS management. The research methodology will detail the study design, participant recruitment criteria, intervention protocol, sample collection procedures, and data analysis methods. Findings from the study will be discussed in Chapter Four, including changes in gut microbiota composition observed in the intervention group compared to the control group. The discussion will also explore any correlations between alterations in gut microbiota and improvements in IBS symptoms following probiotic supplementation. In conclusion, this research seeks to contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the potential benefits of probiotics in modulating gut microbiota composition and alleviating symptoms in individuals with IBS. Understanding the mechanisms by which probiotics influence gut microbiota may lead to the development of targeted interventions for personalized IBS management. Further research in this area could pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from IBS.

Project Overview

The research project on the "Effect of Probiotics on Gut Microbiota Composition in Individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome" aims to investigate the potential impact of probiotics on the gut microbiota composition in individuals diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, affecting a significant portion of the population worldwide. The gut microbiota, a complex community of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract, plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health, immune function, and overall well-being. Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. They have been increasingly recognized for their potential in modulating gut microbiota composition and promoting gut health. This research project seeks to explore how specific probiotic strains may influence the diversity, abundance, and balance of gut microbiota in individuals with IBS. By examining the effects of probiotics on the gut microbiota composition, this study aims to provide valuable insights into the potential therapeutic role of probiotics in managing IBS symptoms and improving gut health. The research will involve conducting a controlled clinical trial with a group of individuals diagnosed with IBS. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either a specific probiotic supplement or a placebo for a designated period. Fecal samples will be collected at baseline and after the intervention to analyze the gut microbiota composition using advanced molecular techniques such as next-generation sequencing. The data obtained will be analyzed to assess changes in the gut microbiota profile and identify any correlations with improvements in IBS symptoms. Through this research project, we aim to contribute to the growing body of evidence on the potential benefits of probiotics in modulating gut microbiota composition and alleviating symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The findings from this study have the potential to inform future treatment strategies for individuals with IBS, highlighting the importance of targeting the gut microbiota for therapeutic interventions. Ultimately, this research may pave the way for personalized probiotic interventions tailored to individuals with IBS based on their gut microbiota profile, leading to more effective and targeted management of this common gastrointestinal condition.
