Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and cognitive function in older adults, a critical area of research given the rising prevalence of age-related cognitive decline and the potential for dietary interventions to mitigate these effects. As the global population ages, understanding the modifiable factors that influence cognitive health has become increasingly important, with the potential to improve the quality of life for older adults and reduce the societal burden associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. Numerous studies have suggested that certain dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, may be associated with better cognitive function and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. However, the underlying mechanisms by which dietary factors influence cognitive aging are not fully understood, and more comprehensive research is needed to elucidate these relationships. This project aims to contribute to this important field of study by employing a multidisciplinary approach, combining epidemiological analyses, dietary assessments, and measures of cognitive function to provide a deeper understanding of the interplay between diet and cognitive aging. The project will involve the recruitment of a diverse sample of older adults, aged 65 and above, who will undergo a comprehensive assessment of their dietary patterns, cognitive function, and other relevant health and lifestyle factors. Dietary data will be collected using validated food frequency questionnaires and dietary recalls, allowing for the identification of specific dietary patterns and the quantification of nutrient and food group intakes. Cognitive function will be evaluated using a battery of standardized neuropsychological tests, assessing domains such as memory, attention, processing speed, and executive function. By analyzing the data collected, the project will seek to identify the dietary patterns that are associated with better cognitive performance and a reduced risk of cognitive decline in older adults. The findings will also explore the potential mediating factors, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular health, that may underlie the relationship between diet and cognitive function. Additionally, the project will investigate the potential moderating effects of factors such as age, sex, education, and the presence of chronic health conditions. The insights gained from this project have the potential to inform the development of targeted dietary interventions and public health recommendations aimed at promoting cognitive health and reducing the burden of age-related cognitive impairment. By elucidating the specific dietary patterns and nutrient profiles that are most beneficial for cognitive function, the project can guide the design of future intervention studies and help shape dietary guidelines for older adults. Furthermore, this research has the potential to contribute to the broader understanding of the complex interplay between diet, lifestyle, and brain health, with implications for the prevention and management of age-related neurodegenerative disorders. By addressing this important public health challenge, the project has the potential to make a significant impact on the quality of life and well-being of older adults, as well as inform future research and clinical practice in the field of cognitive aging.
