Colonialism has had a profound impact on indigenous cultures in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria. This research study aims to investigate and analyze the lasting effects of colonial rule on the cultural identity and heritage of the indigenous people in Nigeria. The study focuses on exploring how colonial policies, practices, and interactions have influenced various aspects of indigenous cultures, including language, religion, traditions, and social structures. The research begins with an introduction that provides background information on the historical context of colonialism in West Africa, highlighting the specific colonial powers that ruled Nigeria and their strategies for cultural domination. The problem statement articulates the need to examine the long-term consequences of colonialism on indigenous cultures, emphasizing the importance of preserving and understanding these cultural heritages in the post-colonial era. The objectives of the study are to critically evaluate the impact of colonialism on indigenous cultures in Nigeria, identify key challenges faced by indigenous communities in preserving their cultural traditions, and propose strategies for cultural revitalization and preservation. The study acknowledges the limitations inherent in historical research and the challenges of accessing comprehensive data on pre-colonial indigenous cultures. The scope of the study includes a detailed analysis of colonial policies and their effects on Nigerian indigenous cultures, with a specific focus on case studies and narratives from different regions of Nigeria. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review, examining existing scholarship on colonial impact on indigenous cultures and related themes. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including data collection methods, sampling techniques, and analytical frameworks. It also discusses ethical considerations and the challenges encountered during the research process.
