Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the enduring impact of colonialism on the dynamics of contemporary international relations. Colonialism, as a historical phenomenon, has left an indelible mark on the global landscape, shaping the structures, power dynamics, and ideological underpinnings of the modern international system. By examining the legacy of colonial experiences, this project seeks to illuminate the ways in which colonial legacies continue to shape and influence international relations in the present day. The project will delve into the complex interplay between colonial histories and contemporary international affairs, exploring how the experiences of colonization and decolonization have molded the geopolitical, economic, and socio-cultural realities of the modern world. It will investigate how colonial power structures, resource extraction, and the imposition of Western ideologies and institutions have left a lasting impact on the political, economic, and social trajectories of former colonies. One central aspect of the project will be the analysis of the colonial roots of contemporary global inequalities and power imbalances. The project will examine how the unequal distribution of resources, the exploitation of local populations, and the enforced dependency on colonial metropoles have contributed to the perpetuation of economic disparities between the Global North and the Global South. Additionally, the project will explore how colonial-era boundaries, ethnic and religious tensions, and the legacy of divide-and-rule strategies continue to shape contemporary geopolitical conflicts and regional instabilities. The project will also delve into the ways in which colonial ideologies and narratives have permeated the discourse and practice of international relations. It will investigate how the colonial mentality, manifest in concepts such as cultural superiority, civilizing missions, and the exploitation of the "Other," have influenced the formulation of foreign policies, the dynamics of international organizations, and the framing of global issues. Furthermore, the project will examine the role of decolonization movements and the emergence of postcolonial states in shaping the contemporary international order. It will explore how the struggles for independence and the quest for self-determination have challenged and transformed the existing global power structures, leading to the reconfiguration of alliances, the rise of new regional powers, and the contestation of dominant international norms and institutions. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on insights from fields such as history, political science, international relations, and postcolonial studies, this project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the enduring influence of colonialism on the contemporary international landscape. The findings of this project will contribute to the ongoing scholarly and policy debates on the legacies of colonialism and their implications for global governance, international development, and the pursuit of more equitable and inclusive international relations.
