On April 18th 2020, the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) , a Biafra separatist organization in Nigeria which have the people’s mandate to restore an independent state of Biafra in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria through an independence referendum modified its nation’s flag. Chukwu S.O (2020). The new flag shares some similarities with its predecessor; they both feature a horizontal tricolour of red, black, and green, charged with a golden rising sun over a golden bar as their primary colour. However, the similarities end there. The new flag features “a hexagram star “designed to depict the historical star of David in the bible (Ebonyi TV Reports 2020).
The main thrust of this paper is to investigate the impact of the modified Biafra flag with a hexagram star and its influence towards the restoration of Biafra. In carrying out this study a descriptive research design were adopted to guide the three research questions and objectives posited in the study.
A structured questionnaire was designed by the researcher and administered on the respondents. It have 8 multiple- choice questions structured from the research questions. It seek to elicit the respondents’ views and feelings about the historical hexagram star of David in the Biafra flag.
From the findings of the study, it was revealed that the hexagram star of David is of great importance in tracing the historical roots of Biafra, and Igbo culture. The study also discovered that nation like Israel which shares the hexagram star in their flag will support Biafra restoration.
The study concluded that although it is true that we increasingly become “global citizens,” we also continue to draw upon our national identity to understand ourselves. As new countries continue to be created, including recent addition of an emerging Biafra state, the importance of national symbols in forging national identity should not be discounted. While globalism increases due to technology, economics, and politics, national symbols remain powerful tools in maintaining nation’s corporate identity and historical antecedent . Because people are social creatures who desire a sense of belonging, the nation remains an important basis for identity worldwide.
The study among others recommend that the modified Biafra flag should be emphatically redesigned with latest 3D technology capable of displaying the star of David in its full form.It also recommends that adequate sensitization should be carried out to educate people on the true reflections of the hexagram star.
