Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of peer-assisted counselling interventions in addressing the mental health and well-being challenges faced by students in secondary schools. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, which can often lead to the emergence of various mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Providing timely and accessible support for these issues is crucial, as unaddressed mental health problems can have long-term implications for a student's academic performance, social functioning, and overall quality of life. Traditional counselling models, while valuable, can often be inaccessible or stigmatized, leading many students to avoid seeking help. Peer-assisted counselling interventions, where trained student peers provide support and guidance to their classmates, have emerged as a promising alternative approach. These programs leverage the power of peer relationships and the shared experiences of adolescence to create a more approachable and relatable support system for students in need. The primary objective of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of peer-assisted counselling interventions in improving the mental health and well-being of secondary school students. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intervention's impact. The project will involve the implementation of a peer-assisted counselling program in selected secondary schools, where student volunteers will be trained to provide counselling and support to their peers. The training program will cover topics such as active listening, empathy, problem-solving, and referral protocols, equipping the student counsellors with the necessary skills to effectively support their peers. Throughout the intervention period, the research team will collect data on various outcome measures, including students' self-reported levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and overall well-being. Qualitative data will also be gathered through focus group discussions and individual interviews with participating students, both those receiving and providing the peer-assisted counselling. This mixed-methods approach will allow for a deeper understanding of the subjective experiences and perceptions of the intervention's impact. The findings of this project will contribute to the growing body of evidence on the potential benefits of peer-assisted counselling interventions in secondary school settings. The results will provide valuable insights into the factors that contribute to the success of these programs, as well as any challenges or limitations that may need to be addressed. These insights can then inform the development of more effective and sustainable peer-assisted counselling initiatives, ultimately improving the mental health support available to secondary school students. Furthermore, the project will explore the potential for peer-assisted counselling to serve as a cost-effective and scalable approach to addressing the mental health needs of adolescents, particularly in resource-constrained educational systems. By empowering students to support one another, the intervention has the potential to reach a wider population of students in need, while also fostering a more inclusive and supportive school community. In conclusion, this project represents a critical step in understanding the role of peer-assisted counselling interventions in promoting the mental health and well-being of secondary school students. The findings may have significant implications for the design and implementation of future mental health support programs in educational settings, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and academic success of students.
