Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the potential benefits of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in promoting the mental health and well-being of adolescents. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, which can often lead to increased susceptibility to mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Developing effective strategies to support adolescent mental health is of paramount importance, as it can have long-lasting implications for their overall well-being and future success. Numerous studies have highlighted the promising effects of MBIs in improving mental health outcomes among various populations, including adults. However, the application and effectiveness of these interventions within the adolescent population remain understudied. This project aims to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of MBIs on adolescent mental health, including measures of depression, anxiety, stress, resilience, and overall well-being. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Participating adolescents will be randomly assigned to either an MBI group or a control group, with the MBI group receiving a structured program of mindfulness-based practices, such as meditation, breathing exercises, and mindful movement, over the course of several weeks. The control group will engage in standard care or alternative activities. Pre- and post-intervention assessments will be conducted to measure changes in mental health outcomes, as well as participants' experiences and perceptions of the intervention. In addition to the quantitative data, the project will also gather qualitative insights through in-depth interviews and focus groups with participants, parents, and educators. This approach will provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which MBIs may impact adolescent mental health, as well as the contextual factors that may influence the effectiveness of these interventions.
