Project Abstract

This project aims to address the critical issue of urban heat island (UHI) effects in rapidly developing cities, where the rapid pace of urbanization and industrialization has led to significant changes in the local climate. The project will focus on mapping and analyzing the UHI phenomenon in selected cities, providing valuable insights into the spatial and temporal dynamics of this phenomenon and its impacts on the urban environment. Urban heat islands are characterized by higher air and surface temperatures in urban areas compared to their surrounding rural or suburban counterparts. This phenomenon is primarily driven by the replacement of natural land cover with impervious surfaces such as buildings, roads, and parking lots, which absorb and retain heat more efficiently than natural surfaces. Additionally, human activities, such as the use of air conditioning, transportation, and industrial processes, contribute to the release of waste heat, further exacerbating the UHI effect. The project's objectives are twofold (1) to develop a comprehensive understanding of the UHI phenomenon in the selected cities, and (2) to provide evidence-based recommendations for urban planning and policy interventions to mitigate the negative impacts of UHI. To achieve these objectives, the project will employ a multidisciplinary approach, combining remote sensing data, ground-based measurements, and socioeconomic data to map and analyze the UHI effects. The project will utilize satellite imagery and thermal infrared data to map the spatial distribution of surface temperatures within the cities, allowing for the identification of hot spots and the analysis of temporal trends. In addition, ground-based measurements, such as air temperature, humidity, and wind speed, will be collected at strategic locations to validate the remote sensing data and provide a more detailed understanding of the UHI phenomenon. Socioeconomic data, including population density, land use patterns, and energy consumption, will be integrated into the analysis to explore the relationship between urban development, human activities, and the UHI effect. This comprehensive dataset will enable the project team to identify the key drivers of the UHI phenomenon and assess its impacts on factors such as energy demand, public health, and ecosystem services. The findings of this project will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, and stakeholder engagement activities. The project team will work closely with local government agencies, urban planners, and community organizations to ensure that the research outputs are tailored to their needs and can be effectively translated into practical interventions. The project's significance lies in its potential to contribute to the development of more sustainable and resilient cities. By understanding the UHI phenomenon and its impacts, urban planners and policymakers can formulate evidence-based strategies to mitigate the negative effects of UHI, such as the implementation of green infrastructure, the use of reflective materials, and the promotion of energy-efficient building designs. This project will serve as a valuable resource for cities grappling with the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate change, providing a framework for the effective management of urban heat island effects.
