Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the profound and multifaceted impact of climate change on urban ecosystems, a critical issue that has far-reaching implications for the sustainability, livability, and resilience of our cities. As the world continues to urbanize, with more than half of the global population now residing in urban areas, understanding the complex interplay between climate change and urban environments has become a pressing concern. Urban ecosystems are unique and delicate systems that encompass the intricate web of interactions between the built environment, natural habitats, and human activities. These ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, which can manifest through rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, and sea-level rise. The project will explore how these climate-driven changes are disrupting the intricate balance of urban ecosystems, leading to a range of challenges and consequences. One of the primary objectives of this project is to assess the impact of climate change on urban biodiversity, including the distribution and abundance of plant and animal species. The project will investigate how shifting climatic conditions are altering the habitats and ecological niches of urban flora and fauna, potentially leading to the displacement or extinction of certain species. This knowledge is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies and maintaining the rich biodiversity that is integral to the health and resilience of urban environments. Additionally, the project will examine the implications of climate change for urban infrastructure and the provision of essential services. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and changes in water availability can put severe strain on urban infrastructure, from transportation networks and buildings to water and energy systems.
