Project Abstract

This project aims to utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis techniques to examine the phenomenon of urban sprawl in a rapidly growing metropolitan area. Urban sprawl, characterized by the uncontrolled expansion of urban development into surrounding rural and natural areas, is a pressing issue facing many cities worldwide. The study area for this project will be a major metropolitan region, which has experienced significant population growth and urban development over the past few decades. The importance of this project lies in its ability to provide a comprehensive understanding of the spatial patterns and drivers of urban sprawl in the selected region. Urban sprawl can have far-reaching consequences, including increased traffic congestion, loss of agricultural land and natural habitats, and uneven distribution of resources and services. By employing GIS and spatial analysis, this project will offer valuable insights into the extent, rate, and underlying factors contributing to urban sprawl, which can inform policymakers and urban planners in their efforts to manage and mitigate its negative impacts. The project will utilize a variety of spatial data sources, including satellite imagery, land use and land cover maps, census data, and transportation networks. Through a combination of remote sensing, spatial modeling, and statistical analysis, the project will address the following key objectives 1. Mapping and quantifying the extent of urban sprawl over time The project will utilize historical satellite imagery and land use data to create a time-series analysis of urban expansion, allowing for the identification of areas experiencing rapid and uncontrolled growth. 2. Identifying the drivers and patterns of urban sprawl The project will examine the relationship between various socioeconomic, demographic, and physical factors (e.g., population growth, transportation infrastructure, land prices, topography) and the observed patterns of urban sprawl. This will help uncover the underlying causes and dynamics of the sprawl process. 3. Assessing the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of urban sprawl The analysis will explore the consequences of urban sprawl, such as the loss of agricultural land, fragmentation of natural habitats, and the unequal distribution of resources and services within the metropolitan region. 4. Developing scenario-based planning and policy recommendations Based on the findings, the project will propose a set of scenario-based planning strategies and policy recommendations to help local authorities and urban planners manage urban growth in a more sustainable and equitable manner. The project will employ a range of GIS and spatial analysis techniques, including spatial modeling, spatial regression, and landscape metrics analysis. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on urban sprawl and provide a valuable resource for urban and regional planning practitioners, policymakers, and researchers working on issues related to sustainable urban development. Overall, this project aims to enhance our understanding of the complex dynamics of urban sprawl and provide evidence-based insights to support the development of more effective strategies for managing urban growth and promoting sustainable urban development in the region.
