Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the spatial dynamics of urban sprawl and its consequential impact on the provision of ecosystem services within a rapidly urbanizing region. Urban sprawl, characterized by the uncontrolled expansion of cities, is a global phenomenon that poses significant threats to the natural environment and the well-being of both urban and rural communities. Understanding the complex interplay between urban development and ecosystem services is crucial for sustainable urban planning and decision-making. The project will employ a multidisciplinary approach, combining remote sensing data, geographic information systems (GIS), and ecological modeling to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of urban sprawl and its impact on the delivery of key ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, water regulation, and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging advanced geospatial techniques, the study will quantify the magnitude and rate of urban land-use change, identify the primary drivers of sprawl, and assess the corresponding changes in the provision of ecosystem services over time. The research will be conducted in a rapidly urbanizing region, selected for its diverse landscape, including urban centers, suburban areas, and surrounding natural habitats. The project will utilize high-resolution satellite imagery, land-use/land-cover data, and detailed socioeconomic information to develop a comprehensive understanding of the spatial dynamics of urban sprawl and its environmental consequences. Through the application of spatially explicit ecosystem service models, the project will assess the impact of urban sprawl on the capacity of the landscape to provide critical ecosystem services. This will involve estimating the changes in carbon storage, water regulation, and habitat suitability for key species, among other variables. The findings will be used to identify areas of high ecological value that are under threat from urban expansion, as well as opportunities for strategic conservation and sustainable development. The project's outputs will include detailed maps, spatial analyses, and quantitative assessments of the relationship between urban sprawl and ecosystem service provision. These findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, and stakeholder engagement activities to inform urban planners, policymakers, and environmental managers. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based guidance for the implementation of sustainable urban development strategies that balance the needs of growing cities with the preservation of critical ecosystem functions. By combining geospatial technologies, ecological modeling, and interdisciplinary collaboration, this project aims to address the complex challenges posed by urban sprawl and its impact on ecosystem services. The insights gained from this research will contribute to the development of more resilient and sustainable urban-rural landscapes, fostering a harmonious coexistence between human settlements and the natural environment.
