Abstract
The pervasive use of social media platforms among young adults has raised concerns about its potential impact on mental health. This research project aims to explore and analyze the relationship between social media usage and mental health issues in young adults from a General Studies perspective. The study will delve into the various ways in which social media can influence mental health outcomes, including its effects on self-esteem, body image, stress levels, and overall psychological well-being. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter 2 offers a comprehensive literature review that examines existing research on the relationship between social media and mental health, covering topics such as social comparison theory, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), and the role of social support online. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, detailing the research design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations and limitations of the methodology employed. In Chapter 4, the findings of the research are presented and discussed in detail, highlighting key trends, patterns, and correlations between social media usage and mental health outcomes in young adults. The research findings suggest that while social media can have both positive and negative effects on mental health, its impact largely depends on individual usage patterns and motivations. Factors such as time spent on social media, types of content consumed, and online interactions play a significant role in shaping mental health outcomes. The discussion in Chapter 4 also explores potential interventions and strategies to promote positive mental health practices among young adults in the digital age. Finally, Chapter 5 offers a conclusion and summary of the research project, highlighting key findings, implications for practice, and recommendations for future research. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of literature on social media and mental health, providing valuable insights for educators, mental health professionals, policymakers, and young adults themselves.
