Project Abstract

Abstract
The pervasive use of social media platforms among young adults has raised concerns about its potential impact on mental health. This research study aims to investigate the relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes in young adults. The research will explore how various factors within social media platforms, such as excessive use, comparison with others, cyberbullying, and exposure to idealized images, may influence the mental well-being of young adults. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on social media habits and mental health indicators among young adults aged 18-25. A sample of 500 young adults will be selected using stratified random sampling techniques to ensure diversity in demographic characteristics. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on social media and mental health, problem statement, objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter 2 presents a detailed literature review covering ten key themes related to social media and mental health, including the impact of social media on self-esteem, body image, loneliness, anxiety, and depression among young adults. In Chapter 3, the research methodology is discussed, outlining the research design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also elaborates on ethical considerations, validity, and reliability of the research findings. Chapter 4 presents the findings of the study, analyzing the relationship between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes in young adults. The chapter discusses the prevalence of social media use, the types of platforms most commonly used, and the correlations between social media habits and mental health indicators. The discussion in Chapter 5 synthesizes the research findings, highlights the key implications for theory and practice, and offers recommendations for future research and interventions. The chapter also summarizes the main conclusions drawn from the study and reflects on the potential implications of the research for addressing the mental health challenges associated with social media use among young adults. In conclusion, this research study contributes to the growing body of literature on the impact of social media on mental health in young adults. By examining the complex interplay between social media usage and mental well-being, the study aims to inform strategies and interventions that promote healthy social media habits and support the mental health of young adults in the digital age.
