Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the potential of agro-industrial byproducts as a sustainable source of valuable antioxidants. Agro-industrial byproducts, which are often considered waste, represent a significant untapped resource that can be leveraged to extract high-value compounds with numerous applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly practices has driven the need to explore alternative sources of natural antioxidants. Synthetic antioxidants, while effective, have raised concerns about their potential health and environmental impacts. In contrast, natural antioxidants derived from plant-based sources, such as those found in agro-industrial byproducts, offer a more appealing and safer alternative. This project will focus on optimizing the extraction and purification of antioxidants from a variety of agro-industrial byproducts, including fruit and vegetable peels, seed husks, and the residues from oil extraction and juice production. The project will employ advanced analytical techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry, to characterize the chemical composition and antioxidant properties of the extracted compounds. Through a systematic investigation of factors influencing the extraction process, such as solvent type, temperature, and extraction time, the project aims to develop efficient and cost-effective extraction protocols that can be readily scaled up for industrial applications. The project will also explore the potential synergistic effects of combining different byproducts, as well as the impact of various pretreatment methods on the extraction yield and the quality of the final antioxidant products. The extracted antioxidants will be evaluated for their efficacy in various applications, including their ability to protect against oxidative stress in cell-based models, their potential for use as natural food preservatives, and their cosmetic applications for skin care and hair products. The project will also assess the environmental and economic benefits of utilizing agro-industrial byproducts as a sustainable source of antioxidants, considering factors such as waste reduction, energy consumption, and the potential for value-added product development. The successful completion of this project will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the utilization of agro-industrial byproducts and will provide valuable insights into the optimization of antioxidant extraction processes. The outcomes of the project will have significant implications for the development of innovative, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solutions for the production of natural antioxidants, which can be readily integrated into various industries, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and circular economy.
