Project Abstract

The rapid urbanization and population growth experienced by cities worldwide have led to a significant increase in the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), posing a significant challenge to urban sustainability. Inefficient waste management practices, such as open dumping and improper disposal, have resulted in environmental degradation, public health risks, and greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions. This project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for sustainable urban waste management, integrating technological, social, and policy-based interventions to address the complex challenges faced by cities. The primary objective is to establish a circular economy approach that minimizes waste generation, maximizes resource recovery, and promotes environmentally responsible waste disposal practices. The project will begin with a comprehensive assessment of the current waste management landscape in selected urban centers, analyzing the existing infrastructure, waste composition, and stakeholder dynamics. This data-driven analysis will inform the development of tailored solutions that consider local context and community needs. One of the key components of the project will be the implementation of innovative waste treatment technologies, such as anaerobic digestion, thermal treatment, and material recovery facilities. These technologies will be designed to maximize resource recovery, reduce the environmental impact of waste, and generate valuable products, such as energy, compost, and recycled materials. In parallel, the project will focus on fostering community engagement and behavior change to promote sustainable waste management practices. This will involve educational campaigns, capacity-building initiatives, and the implementation of incentive-based programs to encourage source segregation, recycling, and responsible waste disposal. Additionally, the project will address the policy and regulatory frameworks governing waste management, working with local and national authorities to develop and implement comprehensive waste management strategies. This will include the establishment of clear guidelines, enforcement mechanisms, and financial incentives to drive the adoption of sustainable practices. The project will also explore the integration of the informal waste sector, which plays a crucial role in many developing countries. By incorporating these informal waste pickers and recyclers into the formal waste management system, the project aims to create livelihood opportunities, enhance social inclusion, and leverage their expertise in material recovery. Through a collaborative approach involving municipal authorities, waste management service providers, research institutions, and community stakeholders, this project will establish a replicable and scalable model for sustainable urban waste management. The key outcomes will include reduced waste generation, increased resource recovery and recycling rates, improved environmental and public health outcomes, and the creation of green jobs and economic opportunities. By addressing the multifaceted challenges of urban waste management, this project will contribute to the development of more sustainable and resilient cities, aligning with global sustainability frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
