Project Abstract

Abstract
Methane emissions from sanitary landfills and sewage treatment plants are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. In order to mitigate these emissions, various strategies have been proposed and implemented. This research project aims to explore and evaluate different methods for reducing methane emissions from sanitary landfills and sewage treatment plants. One approach to mitigate methane emissions from landfills is the installation of gas collection systems. These systems capture methane generated during the decomposition of organic waste and can be used for energy production. The effectiveness of gas collection systems in reducing methane emissions will be assessed through field measurements and data analysis. In sewage treatment plants, methane is produced during the anaerobic digestion of sludge. To reduce these emissions, strategies such as optimizing the digestion process, improving gas collection and utilization, and implementing technologies for methane recovery will be investigated. The potential for using methane as a renewable energy source will also be evaluated. Furthermore, this research project will explore the feasibility and effectiveness of using cover materials to reduce methane emissions from landfills. Cover materials can provide an effective barrier to methane migration and enhance gas collection efficiency. The impact of different cover materials on methane emissions will be assessed through laboratory experiments and field trials. In addition to technological solutions, this research project will also consider the role of policy and regulations in mitigating methane emissions from sanitary landfills and sewage treatment plants. By analyzing existing policies and identifying best practices, recommendations will be developed to support the implementation of effective mitigation strategies. Overall, this research project aims to contribute to the understanding of methane emissions from sanitary landfills and sewage treatment plants and provide insights into effective mitigation measures. By evaluating different strategies, including gas collection systems, optimization of anaerobic digestion processes, use of cover materials, and policy interventions, this project seeks to identify practical solutions for reducing methane emissions and advancing sustainable waste management practices.
