Consumer choices play a significant role in shaping the economy and the environment. This research project explores the intersection of economics and ethical concerns in relation to consumer choices impacting the environment. The study delves into the complexities of how individuals make decisions as consumers and the ethical considerations that should be taken into account when making those choices. Economics often prioritizes efficiency and profit maximization, leading to a focus on short-term gains without always considering the long-term consequences for the environment. This research project aims to highlight the importance of integrating ethical considerations into economic decision-making processes to ensure sustainable outcomes for the environment. Consumers have the power to drive demand for environmentally friendly products and influence corporate practices through their choices. By examining the motivations behind consumer behavior and the factors that influence their choices, this research project aims to provide insights into how ethical concerns can be integrated into economic models to promote environmentally sustainable practices. Ethical concerns in consumer choices extend beyond the immediate impact on the environment to encompass broader social and moral implications. Consumers are increasingly seeking products and services that align with their values, including environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

The article examines individual action informed by ethical concerns for the environment as a strategy for moving toward more sustainable consumption. The article first employs a model of rational choice to analyze independent consumer choices among the usually assumed self- and welfare-centered consumers and then expands the model to analyze the implications of other than self- and welfare-centered motivations for consumer choice.

The article next analyzes interdependent consumer choices informed by self- and welfare-centered values with the help of a simple game-theoretic model and then moves on to examine the implications of nonutilitarian environmental concerns for interdependent consumer choice in the same game-theoretic framework. The article concludes that although a strategy based on individual action may have limited promise when environmental concerns are widely shared, the case for collective action remains strong because of both efficiency and equity reasons.
