Project Abstract

Abstract
Building sustainable societies is a critical global challenge that requires integrated approaches across various sectors to ensure long-term well-being for current and future generations. This research explores the multifaceted dimensions of sustainability, focusing on environmental, social, and economic aspects. The study investigates the interconnectedness of these dimensions and their impact on building resilient communities and societies. The environmental dimension of sustainability emphasizes the need to protect natural resources, reduce pollution, and mitigate climate change. By implementing sustainable practices such as renewable energy sources, waste reduction, and conservation efforts, societies can minimize their ecological footprint and promote environmental stewardship. Additionally, sustainable societies prioritize biodiversity conservation, sustainable land use, and water management to maintain ecosystem health and resilience. Social sustainability involves creating inclusive and equitable societies that prioritize social justice, human rights, and well-being for all members of the community. This dimension emphasizes the importance of fostering social cohesion, promoting diversity, and ensuring access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and housing. Building sustainable societies requires addressing social inequalities, empowering marginalized groups, and promoting community engagement to enhance quality of life and promote social harmony. The economic dimension of sustainability focuses on promoting long-term prosperity and economic stability without compromising environmental or social well-being. Sustainable societies strive to achieve economic growth that is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and ethically responsible. This involves adopting sustainable business practices, supporting local industries, and investing in green technologies to create jobs and stimulate economic development while minimizing negative impacts on the environment. Integrating these dimensions of sustainability is essential for building resilient communities and societies capable of adapting to global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainability, policymakers, businesses, and communities can work together to create a more sustainable future for all. This research highlights the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility in building sustainable societies that prioritize the well-being of people, the planet, and future generations.

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

A collection of articles addressing the issue of whether the industrial model of human progress can be sustained in the long term. It asks what the social, political, economic and environmental implications as well as potential solutions to the problem of resource-intensive growth are.

In the early 1970s, public attention was first focused on the ecological limits to economic growth. A global dialogue about the need for sustainable development began in the 1980s. This collection of previously unpublished articles addresses in a comprehensive fashion the 1990s’ question of whether the industrial model of human progress can be sustained in the long run.

It analyzes the social, political, economic, and environmental implications as well as potential solutions to the problem of resource-intensive growth. Twenty experts consider matters on a global scale, focusing on institutional and value issues, international issues such as Global North vs. Global South, and the debate between growth and development.

The book
–addresses issues from a multidisciplinary perspective;
–suggests realistic responses to the problems of ecological limits;
–provides a variety of fresh alternatives to the non-sustainable growth model that now pervades public discourse;
–applies an evolutionary framework to an analysis of building a more sustainable world.
