Abstract
Climate change, particularly the increased frequency and intensity of floods, poses a significant threat to housing for the urban poor in Ilajesomolu Local Government. This study aims to explore the effects of flood-induced by climate change on housing conditions for the urban poor in this area. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to gather data on the impacts of flooding on housing quality, affordability, and accessibility for low-income residents in Ilajesomolu. The qualitative component of the study will involve in-depth interviews with residents, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to understand the experiences, perceptions, and coping strategies related to flood-induced housing challenges. These interviews will provide insights into the specific ways in which flooding affects housing conditions and exacerbates existing vulnerabilities among the urban poor in Ilajesomolu. The quantitative survey will gather data on the extent of flood damage to housing structures, the economic costs of repair and reconstruction, and the overall impact on housing affordability and accessibility for low-income households. By analyzing this data, the study aims to identify the most significant challenges faced by the urban poor in accessing safe and adequate housing in the context of climate change-induced floods. Furthermore, this research will explore potential adaptation and mitigation strategies to improve housing resilience and reduce vulnerability among the urban poor in Ilajesomolu. By engaging with local communities and stakeholders, the study seeks to develop context-specific recommendations for enhancing housing quality, affordability, and accessibility in the face of increasing flood risks. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on climate change impacts on housing for low-income populations and inform policy and practice in addressing the housing needs of the urban poor in flood-prone areas. Ultimately, this research aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by marginalized communities in the context of climate change and advocate for more inclusive and sustainable housing solutions in Ilajesomolu Local Government and similar urban settings.
