Urban areas worldwide are facing increasing challenges in managing waste effectively to ensure environmental sustainability. This research project aims to assess sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, with a focus on identifying current practices, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from waste management stakeholders, including local authorities, waste management companies, and community members. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review, covering ten key areas related to sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. Chapter Three details the research methodology, including sampling techniques, data collection methods, data analysis procedures, ethical considerations, and limitations. Chapter Four presents the findings of the research, discussing seven key themes identified through data analysis. These themes include current waste management practices, challenges faced by stakeholders, opportunities for improvement, community engagement, policy implications, technological innovations, and best practices from other urban areas. The chapter provides a detailed discussion of each theme, supported by quotes and data from survey responses and interviews. Chapter Five concludes the research project by summarizing the key findings, discussing the implications for sustainable waste management in urban areas, and offering recommendations for future research and practical applications. The conclusion highlights the importance of adopting sustainable waste management practices to address environmental concerns, improve public health, and promote community well-being in urban areas. Overall, this research project contributes to the existing body of knowledge on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, providing valuable insights for policymakers, waste management stakeholders, and researchers. By understanding the current state of waste management, identifying challenges, and exploring opportunities for improvement, this study aims to support the development of effective and sustainable waste management strategies that can benefit urban communities and the environment.
