Abstract
The effective management of waste in urban areas is a critical aspect of sustainable development, as it directly impacts public health, environmental quality, and overall quality of life. This research project focuses on the assessment of sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, aiming to identify challenges, opportunities, and best practices for improving waste management systems. The study is guided by the following objectives to examine the current waste management practices in urban areas, to identify the key environmental and social issues associated with waste management, to assess the effectiveness of existing waste management policies and strategies, and to propose recommendations for enhancing sustainable waste management practices. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review, covering ten key themes related to sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. These themes include waste generation trends, waste collection and transportation systems, waste treatment and disposal methods, recycling and resource recovery initiatives, regulatory frameworks, public participation in waste management, environmental impacts of improper waste disposal, economic considerations in waste management, technological innovations in waste management, and best practices from global case studies. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis approaches, ethical considerations, and limitations of the study. The chapter also includes a discussion on the theoretical framework guiding the research and the rationale for selecting specific research methods. Chapter Four presents the findings of the research, based on the analysis of data collected through surveys, interviews, and document reviews. The chapter discusses key insights related to the current state of waste management practices in urban areas, challenges faced by stakeholders, opportunities for improvement, and emerging trends in sustainable waste management. The findings are presented in a structured manner, linking back to the research objectives and relevant literature. Chapter Five serves as the conclusion and summary of the research project, highlighting the key findings, implications for policy and practice, recommendations for future research, and concluding remarks.
