Project Abstract

The rapid urbanization and population growth in cities around the world have led to a significant increase in the generation of municipal solid waste, posing a major challenge to urban sustainability. Inefficient waste management practices not only contribute to environmental degradation but also pose serious health risks to urban residents. This project aims to develop comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategies that can be implemented in urban cities to address these pressing issues. The project begins by conducting a thorough assessment of the current waste management practices in selected urban centers. This includes analyzing the composition and volume of waste generated, as well as the existing infrastructure, policies, and stakeholder involvement in waste management. The findings from this assessment will provide a solid foundation for the development of innovative and tailored solutions. One of the key focuses of this project is the implementation of a circular economy approach to waste management. This involves exploring ways to minimize waste generation, promote waste recycling and reuse, and create value-added products from waste streams. The project will examine successful case studies from around the world and adapt these strategies to the specific contexts of the target cities. The project will also explore the integration of emerging technologies, such as waste-to-energy systems, automated waste sorting, and blockchain-based traceability, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of waste management processes. These technological solutions will be evaluated for their feasibility, scalability, and environmental impact, ensuring that they align with the overall sustainability objectives. Stakeholder engagement and capacity building are crucial components of this project.
