Project Abstract

The project "" aims to address the growing challenge of waste management in urban areas, which has become a critical issue worldwide. As cities continue to expand and populations increase, the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) has escalated, putting significant strain on existing waste management infrastructure and the environment. This project seeks to develop innovative and comprehensive strategies to effectively manage waste in a sustainable manner, with a focus on reducing environmental impact, improving resource recovery, and promoting community engagement. The importance of this project lies in the pressing need to find solutions to the mounting waste crisis faced by urban centers. Inefficient waste management practices have led to the accumulation of waste in landfills, open dumping sites, and the pollution of air, water, and soil. This not only poses a threat to public health and the environment but also contributes to the depletion of natural resources and the emission of greenhouse gases, exacerbating climate change. To achieve these objectives, the project will employ a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on expertise from fields such as environmental engineering, urban planning, public policy, and social sciences. The project will begin with a comprehensive assessment of the existing waste management systems in the target urban areas, examining factors such as waste generation patterns, collection and transportation methods, disposal practices, and the involvement of various stakeholders. Based on the findings from the assessment, the project team will then design and implement sustainable waste management strategies that prioritize the principles of the waste hierarchy reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover. This may include the development of advanced waste sorting and processing technologies, the establishment of decentralized composting and anaerobic digestion facilities, the promotion of extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies, and the implementation of public awareness campaigns to encourage waste reduction and recycling at the community level. Throughout the project, community engagement will be a crucial component, ensuring that the proposed strategies and solutions are tailored to the local context and have the support and participation of the residents. The project will also explore the potential for creating green jobs and fostering a circular economy within the waste management sector, thereby contributing to the broader goal of sustainable urban development.
