Project Abstract

The project on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas aims to address the growing challenge of waste management in densely populated urban centers. As cities continue to experience rapid population growth and urbanization, the generation of municipal solid waste has increased exponentially, posing significant environmental, social, and economic challenges. This project seeks to explore innovative and sustainable solutions that can be implemented to enhance waste management systems, reduce the environmental impact of waste, and promote a more circular economy approach. The importance of this project cannot be overstated, as proper waste management is essential for maintaining public health, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable development. In many urban areas, the existing waste management infrastructure is often overwhelmed, leading to the accumulation of waste in landfills, illegal dumping, and the release of pollutants into the air, water, and soil. These issues have far-reaching consequences, including the contamination of natural resources, the spread of diseases, and the degradation of urban landscapes. This project aims to address these challenges by conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current waste management practices in selected urban areas. Through a combination of stakeholder engagement, data collection, and analysis, the project will identify the key challenges, barriers, and opportunities for improving waste management systems. The research will focus on understanding the composition and volume of waste generated, the existing collection and disposal methods, and the socioeconomic and cultural factors that influence waste management behavior. Based on the findings of the assessment, the project will then develop and pilot innovative, sustainable waste management solutions that can be tailored to the specific needs and context of the urban areas under study. These solutions may include, but are not limited to, the implementation of source separation and recycling programs, the development of composting and anaerobic digestion facilities, the optimization of waste collection and transportation logistics, and the engagement of local communities and businesses in waste reduction and resource recovery efforts. The project will also explore the potential for the circular economy approach, where waste is viewed as a valuable resource that can be reused, recycled, or repurposed, rather than simply disposed of. By promoting the circular economy, the project aims to reduce the amount of waste generated, create new economic opportunities, and foster a more sustainable relationship between urban communities and their environment. Throughout the project, the research team will work closely with local authorities, waste management service providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure the proposed solutions are feasible, cost-effective, and aligned with the needs and priorities of the urban communities. The project will also seek to build capacity and raise awareness among the general public, encouraging behavioral changes and fostering a culture of waste reduction and responsible waste management.
