Project Abstract

The project on is of paramount importance as cities worldwide grapple with the growing challenge of effectively managing the ever-increasing volume of waste generated by their burgeoning populations. Urban centers, which account for more than half of the global population, are at the forefront of this crisis, as they struggle to find sustainable solutions to handle the complex and diverse waste streams that arise from residential, commercial, and industrial activities. This project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for implementing sustainable waste management practices in urban communities, with a focus on driving a circular economy approach and minimizing the environmental impact of waste. The study will analyze the current state of waste management in selected urban centers, identify the key challenges and barriers, and propose innovative strategies that can be tailored to the unique characteristics and needs of each community. One of the primary objectives of the project is to promote the adoption of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) as the foundation for sustainable waste management. The research will explore various waste prevention and minimization techniques, including source reduction, product design for sustainability, and the implementation of extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes. Additionally, the project will investigate the potential for expanding and optimizing waste recycling and reuse systems, leveraging technological advancements and stakeholder collaboration to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of these processes. The project will also delve into the role of organic waste management, which is a significant component of the urban waste stream. Strategies for the effective collection, treatment, and utilization of organic waste, such as composting and anaerobic digestion, will be evaluated to promote the recovery of valuable resources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill disposal. Furthermore, the project will address the issue of hazardous and electronic waste (e-waste) management, which poses unique challenges in urban settings. The research will explore innovative approaches to the safe handling, transportation, and disposal of these waste streams, while also investigating opportunities for the recovery and reuse of valuable materials. The project's methodology will combine quantitative and qualitative research methods, including data analysis, stakeholder interviews, case studies, and the development of pilot projects. The research team will collaborate with local authorities, waste management companies, community organizations, and academic institutions to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the project.
