Abstract
Property tax assessment on residential properties in Imo State is a critical aspect of local government revenue generation and administration. This research project aims to analyze the current property tax assessment system in Imo State, focusing specifically on residential properties. The study will explore the methods and procedures used by the Imo State government in assessing property taxes on residential properties, as well as the challenges and limitations faced in the process. The research will involve a comprehensive review of relevant literature on property tax assessment, local government revenue generation, and property taxation in Nigeria. Data will be collected through interviews with key stakeholders involved in property tax assessment in Imo State, including government officials, tax assessors, property owners, and tax consultants. Additionally, property tax assessment records and documents will be analyzed to understand the assessment criteria, valuation methods, and tax rates applied to residential properties in Imo State. The findings of the study will provide insights into the effectiveness and efficiency of the current property tax assessment system in Imo State, with a focus on residential properties. The research will identify areas for improvement in the assessment process, such as the need for standardized valuation methods, accurate property data collection, and fair tax rates. Recommendations will be made to enhance the transparency, equity, and compliance of property tax assessment on residential properties in Imo State. By examining the property tax assessment system in Imo State, this research project contributes to the body of knowledge on local government revenue generation and property taxation in Nigeria. The study aims to provide practical recommendations for policymakers, tax administrators, and property owners to improve the property tax assessment process and enhance revenue generation for local governments in Imo State. Ultimately, the research findings will contribute to the development of more efficient and equitable property tax systems that support sustainable revenue generation and governance at the local level.
