Abstract
Air pollution control within an industrial environment is a critical aspect of environmental management, particularly in areas with high industrial activities such as refineries. This research project focuses on the case study of the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria, to assess the current air pollution control measures in place and to provide recommendations for improvement. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Air quality monitoring is conducted using air quality sensors to measure the levels of pollutants emitted by the refinery operations. Additionally, interviews and surveys are conducted with key stakeholders, including refinery personnel, environmental regulators, and local community members, to gather insights on the existing air pollution control measures and their effectiveness. The findings of the study indicate that the Port Harcourt Refinery employs various air pollution control technologies, such as electrostatic precipitators and flue gas desulfurization systems, to reduce emissions of particulate matter and sulfur dioxide. However, there are gaps in the implementation and maintenance of these technologies, leading to occasional exceedances of air quality standards in the surrounding areas. Based on the research findings, several recommendations are proposed to enhance air pollution control at the Port Harcourt Refinery. These include improving the maintenance of existing pollution control equipment, investing in newer and more efficient technologies, enhancing monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and increasing community engagement and awareness initiatives. Overall, effective air pollution control within industrial environments such as the Port Harcourt Refinery is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. By implementing the recommendations outlined in this study, the refinery can reduce its environmental footprint, mitigate the impact of air pollution on the surrounding communities, and demonstrate its commitment to sustainable and responsible industrial practices.
