Project Abstract

Land tenure systems in Nigeria have been a topic of interest due to their complexities and implications on land management and development. This study focuses on the land tenure system in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, with a specific case study of Owerri Municipal Council. The research aims to examine the historical background, current practices, challenges, and potential solutions related to land tenure in the study area. The research methodology involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Primary data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and observations to gather insights from key stakeholders including community members, traditional leaders, government officials, and land experts. Secondary data will be sourced from existing literature, reports, and records to provide a comprehensive understanding of the land tenure system in the area. The study findings are expected to reveal the various types of land tenure systems existing in Ikeduru LGA and Owerri Municipal Council, including customary, statutory, and informal arrangements. It will explore the role of traditional institutions, government policies, and socio-economic factors in shaping land ownership, access, and use. The research will also highlight the challenges faced by communities in terms of land disputes, insecure land rights, land grabbing, and inadequate land administration. Furthermore, the study aims to propose recommendations for improving the land tenure system in the study area. This may include reforms in land laws and policies, strengthening of land governance institutions, capacity building for stakeholders, and community participation in decision-making processes. The research seeks to contribute to the existing knowledge on land tenure systems in Nigeria and provide practical insights for policymakers, practitioners, and communities involved in land management and development. In conclusion, the study on the land tenure system in Ikeduru LGA of Imo State, with a case study of Owerri Municipal Council, is crucial for understanding the dynamics of land ownership, access, and control in the region. By examining the historical context, current practices, challenges, and potential solutions, the research aims to offer valuable recommendations for enhancing land tenure security and promoting sustainable land management practices in the study area.
