This research explores how African writers depict the concepts of identity and belonging in their literary works, examining the ways in which these themes intersect with issues of culture, history, and social dynamics. Through a comprehensive analysis of selected works by prominent African authors, this study aims to shed light on the various dimensions of identity and belonging as portrayed in modern African literature. The research begins with an introductory chapter that provides a background to the study, outlining the significance of exploring identity and belonging in the context of African literature. The problem statement highlights the need to critically examine how African writers address these themes in their works, considering the diversity of experiences and perspectives within the continent. The objectives of the study are to analyze the different ways in which identity and belonging are represented in contemporary African literature, identify common patterns and themes across various works, and explore the implications of these representations for understanding African societies. The literature review in Chapter Two delves into existing scholarship on the representation of identity and belonging in African literature, drawing on a wide range of critical perspectives and theoretical frameworks.
