This research project explores the portrayal of gender roles in contemporary African literature through a comparative study. The study aims to investigate how African writers depict and challenge traditional gender norms, roles, and expectations in their literary works. The research will focus on a selection of contemporary African novels and short stories to analyze the representation of gender dynamics and the evolving roles of men and women in African societies. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, highlighting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure, and definition of key terms. This chapter sets the foundation for the subsequent chapters by establishing the rationale and framework for the comparative analysis of gender roles in African literature. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that examines existing scholarship on gender studies, African literature, and postcolonial theory. The chapter synthesizes and critiques prior research to provide a theoretical framework for understanding how gender roles are depicted in contemporary African literary works. It includes discussions on the representation of masculinity, femininity, power dynamics, and societal expectations in African literature.
