This research study critically examines the portrayal of mental illness in contemporary African literature. The depiction of mental health issues in literature offers valuable insights into the societal perceptions, stigmas, and challenges surrounding mental illness in African societies. Through a thorough analysis of selected literary works, this research aims to shed light on how mental illness is represented, understood, and interpreted in the context of African literature. The research begins with an exploration of the historical and cultural background of mental health in Africa, providing a foundation for understanding how mental illness has been perceived and addressed within African communities. By examining the unique socio-cultural dynamics that influence the portrayal of mental illness in literature, this study seeks to uncover the underlying themes, motivations, and perspectives that authors employ in their representations of mental health issues. Through an extensive literature review, this research will analyze a diverse range of contemporary African literary works that feature characters grappling with mental illness.
