This research project explores the representation of gender in contemporary African literature with a focus on female protagonists. The study aims to analyze and compare the portrayal of female characters in selected African literary works, examining how gender roles, stereotypes, and experiences are depicted within the narratives. Through a comparative approach, the research seeks to identify common themes and variations in the representation of female protagonists across different African literary contexts. Chapter One provides the introduction to the research, presenting the background of the study, the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. The introduction sets the foundation for the research, outlining the rationale and framework for the comparative analysis of gender representation in African literature. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that synthesizes existing scholarship on the representation of gender in African literature. This chapter examines key theories, concepts, and critical perspectives related to gender studies in literature, providing a theoretical framework for the comparative analysis of female protagonists in African narratives. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study.
