Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, yet its representation in literature remains a relatively underexplored area, particularly within the context of African literature. This research project aims to delve into the representation of mental health in contemporary African literature, focusing on how authors depict various mental health issues and challenges faced by characters within their works. Through a comprehensive analysis of selected texts, this study seeks to uncover the nuanced ways in which mental health is portrayed and the implications it has for understanding individual experiences, societal attitudes, and cultural norms surrounding mental health in the African context. The research begins with an introduction that outlines the background and significance of the study, highlighting the gap in existing scholarship on the representation of mental health in African literature. The problem statement underscores the need to address misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health issues in African societies through a critical examination of literary representations. The objectives of the study include analyzing the themes, characters, and narrative techniques employed by African authors to portray mental health, as well as identifying common patterns and divergences in these representations. The literature review section provides a comprehensive survey of existing scholarship on mental health in African literature, drawing on both Western and African theoretical frameworks to contextualize the analysis.
