Abstract
The representation of gender in contemporary African literature is a complex and multifaceted topic that reflects the diverse experiences and perspectives of African writers. This research project aims to explore how gender is portrayed in selected works of contemporary African literature, with a focus on the intersectionality of gender with other social categories such as race, class, and sexuality. The study will critically analyze the ways in which African writers depict gender roles, stereotypes, and power dynamics within the context of their societies. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research, presenting the background of the study and outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure, and definition of terms. The introduction sets the stage for the subsequent chapters by establishing the context and rationale for the research. Chapter 2 consists of a comprehensive literature review that examines existing scholarship on the representation of gender in African literature. The review synthesizes key themes, theories, and debates in the field, providing a critical overview of how gender has been conceptualized and portrayed in contemporary African literary texts.
