This research project delves into the representation of mental illness in contemporary literature, exploring how authors grapple with the challenges of depicting psychological disorders in their works. Drawing on a diverse range of literary texts from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this study seeks to analyze the various ways in which mental illness is depicted, understood, and represented in fiction. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, offering a background of the study and outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the research, and definition of key terms. This chapter sets the foundation for the subsequent chapters by framing the research within its broader context and establishing the rationale and objectives of the study. Chapter Two comprises a comprehensive literature review that examines existing scholarship on the portrayal of mental illness in contemporary literature.
