Project Abstract

This project aims to critically examine the ways in which gender is portrayed and represented in contemporary British literature. In recent decades, the literary landscape in the United Kingdom has undergone a significant transformation, with a growing number of diverse voices and perspectives being represented. This project seeks to investigate how these shifting narratives have impacted the depiction of gender, exploring the complexities, nuances, and potential challenges in the literary exploration of gender identity, roles, and power dynamics. The study will focus on a selection of contemporary British novels, short stories, and poetry published within the last two decades. By analyzing a diverse range of works from both established and emerging authors, the project will uncover the dominant tropes, themes, and narrative strategies employed in the representation of gender. Particular attention will be paid to the intersections of gender with other social identity markers, such as race, class, sexuality, and disability, in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of gender in contemporary British literature.
