Project Abstract

Exploring the Representation of Gender and Sexuality in Select 21st-Century British Novels This project aims to critically examine the depiction of gender and sexuality in a selection of prominent British novels published in the 21st century. In recent decades, there has been a growing recognition of the need to address the complex and evolving nature of gender and sexual identities within the literary sphere. This study seeks to contribute to the ongoing discourse by analyzing how contemporary British authors have engaged with these themes and the implications of their representations. The 21st century has witnessed a significant shift in the cultural landscape, marked by increased visibility and dialogue surrounding gender and sexuality. This project will investigate how this societal transformation has been reflected in the works of several acclaimed British novelists. By exploring the literary portrayals of gender roles, gender expression, and sexual orientation, the study aims to uncover the nuances, complexities, and potential shifts in the ways these aspects of identity are articulated within the selected novels. The project will focus on a diverse range of contemporary British novels, carefully curated to capture the breadth and depth of the literary exploration of gender and sexuality.
