Project Abstract

This project aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the evolving portrayal of gender and sexuality in contemporary British literature. In recent decades, there has been a significant shift in the ways in which authors have approached these complex and often contentious themes, reflecting the broader societal changes and the growing awareness of LGBTQ+ rights and issues. By examining a diverse range of literary works, this project seeks to uncover the nuanced and multifaceted representations of gender and sexuality, and to explore how these representations have both mirrored and shaped the cultural landscape of modern Britain. At the core of this project is the recognition that literature, as a powerful medium of artistic expression, has the capacity to challenge traditional norms, question societal assumptions, and give voice to marginalized perspectives. The selected contemporary British authors, ranging from established figures to emerging voices, have utilized their craft to navigate the complexities of gender and sexuality, often subverting dominant narratives and offering alternative perspectives. Through close textual analysis and critical engagement with relevant theoretical frameworks, this project will delve into the ways in which these authors have portrayed concepts of masculinity, femininity, and non-binary identities, as well as the diverse expressions of sexual orientation and identity.
