Project Abstract

This project aims to investigate the key factors that influence student enrollment in economics programs at the tertiary level. Understanding the drivers behind student enrollment is crucial for educational institutions to develop effective strategies to attract and retain students in this field of study. The findings of this project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, academic administrators, and program coordinators to enhance the accessibility and appeal of economics programs. The study will explore a wide range of factors that may contribute to students' decisions to enroll in economics programs. These factors can be broadly categorized into three main areas academic, socioeconomic, and personal. The academic factors may include the perceived difficulty of the program, the quality of faculty and teaching, the availability of internships and research opportunities, and the perceived career prospects for economics graduates. The socioeconomic factors may encompass the affordability of tuition fees, the availability of financial aid and scholarships, the family's educational background, and the overall economic conditions in the region or country. The personal factors may involve students' interests, aptitudes, and career aspirations, as well as the influence of family, peers, and societal perceptions of the economics field. To gather comprehensive data, the project will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. The quantitative component will involve the analysis of historical enrollment data, national surveys, and statistical models to identify the significance and magnitude of various factors on student enrollment. The qualitative component will include in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with current and prospective economics students, as well as faculty members and academic advisors, to gain a deeper understanding of the personal and contextual factors shaping students' enrollment decisions. The findings of this project are expected to have several important implications. First, the insights gained will enable educational institutions to develop more targeted marketing and recruitment strategies to attract a diverse pool of students to their economics programs. This may include tailoring program content and delivery, offering relevant support services, and addressing financial barriers to enrollment. Second, the project will inform the design of academic curricula and co-curricular activities to better align with student interests and career aspirations, thereby enhancing the overall student experience and retention rates. Third, the findings may guide policymakers in designing initiatives and incentives to promote the study of economics, such as scholarship programs, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with the private sector.
