Abstract
Labour unionism plays a significant role in shaping the administration of institutions, including universities like Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.) in Nigeria. This study focuses on examining the proximate causes and the effects of labour unionism on the administration of O.A.U., Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques to provide a comprehensive analysis. The proximate causes of labour unionism at O.A.U. are rooted in historical, economic, and socio-political factors. These factors include inadequate funding, poor working conditions, lack of transparency in decision-making processes, and perceived injustices towards staff members. The study investigates how these factors have contributed to the rise of labour unionism within the university setting. Furthermore, the research explores the effects of labour unionism on the administration of O.A.U. The study examines how labour unions have influenced governance structures, decision-making processes, and overall institutional effectiveness.
