Project Abstract

Abstract
In-service teacher education plays a crucial role in shaping the academic performances of primary school pupils. This research project aimed to investigate the effect of in-service teacher education programs on the academic performances of primary school pupils. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative analysis of academic performance data and qualitative insights from teachers and students. The quantitative analysis involved collecting academic performance data from primary school pupils before and after the implementation of in-service teacher education programs. The data was analyzed using statistical methods to determine any significant changes in academic performances following the teacher training initiatives. The results indicated a positive correlation between in-service teacher education and improved academic performances among primary school pupils. In addition to the quantitative analysis, qualitative data was gathered through interviews and surveys with teachers and students. Teachers reported feeling more equipped and confident in their teaching methods after participating in in-service education programs. They highlighted the benefits of learning new teaching strategies, improving classroom management skills, and enhancing their subject knowledge. Students also provided valuable insights into the impact of in-service teacher education on their academic performances. Many students noted a positive change in the classroom environment, with teachers implementing innovative teaching methods and engaging activities. This led to increased motivation and interest in learning among the pupils, ultimately contributing to improved academic achievements. Overall, the findings of this research project suggest that in-service teacher education has a significant positive effect on the academic performances of primary school pupils. By equipping teachers with new skills, knowledge, and teaching strategies, in-service education programs can enhance the quality of teaching and learning in primary schools. This, in turn, leads to improved academic performances among pupils, creating a more conducive and effective learning environment. The implications of this research highlight the importance of investing in continuous professional development for teachers to ensure better educational outcomes for primary school pupils. By supporting in-service teacher education initiatives, policymakers and school administrators can contribute to the overall improvement of academic performances and student achievements in primary schools.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In-service training was set up as a result of government pronouncement that by the year (2000) the least qualification of teacher in primary school will be (NCE) Nigeria certificate in education. It was because of this that every teacher want to obtain this certificate and in order to get it, many teachers are attending in-service training.

Due to some problems, not all teachers can go in for regular courses; consequently, there is need for them to merge courses in the in-service training programme.

1.3 RESEARCHERS INTEND TO ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

i. Is there real need for in-service education for teachers?

ii. How do we organize in-service training so that it will not interfere with the primary school programme?

iii. How do we determine those that will go in for in-service training at a given time?

iv. How do we determine the teacher in-service educational programme?

v. What will be the duration of the in-service education programme?

vi. Who funds the academic training?

vii. How do we ensure that teachers use the knowledge gained during in-service training to improve the academic performance of the pupils?

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
